Korean¡¯s Perception of Mad Cow Disease
Cho Byong-Hee

Abstract
It seems to be natural to have a worry about disease, since it represents pain and death. However, Koreans worry about disease very severely and persist in a long period, as shown in case of HIV/AIDS for 25 years after its first outbreak. The phobia of mad cow disease in 2008 could be explained in terms of this unique history of disease perception. I analyzed the 1002 sample survey data in order to explain this unique disease perception. The analysis showed that about two third of the respondents had worry about mad cow disease(MCD). Their worry was closely related to the disease phobia about HIV/AIDS and Avian Influenza(AI). The people with high worry about HIV/AIDS also had high phobia about MCD and AI. The phobia about MCD and AI was influenced by social trust factors and risk factors. The MCD perception was influenced by political factors furthermore. The MCD phobia was the important factor to make people participate in anti-US beef import movement. Internet use and personal exposure to risks were also influenced the participation. The political and social factors influenced the movement participation only in the background.
